According to HealthyChildren.org, one in 285 children is diagnosed with the disease before the cusp of adulthood (age 20). Although rare, childhood cancer is the leading cause of child death from disease in the country according to Cancer.gov. Children and adolescents are prone to leukemia (cancer of the blood and bone marrow) and lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system).
Acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoid leukemia are the two types of leukemia. Leukemia can transition to metastasis when it spreads to other parts of the body such as the testicles, brain, ovaries, spinal cord, and kidney, resulting in secondary tumors. Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are the two types of lymphomas.
Cancers of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) are also possible among children and adolescents. These include brain-stem gliomas, ependymomas, astrocytoma, and primitive neuroectodermal tumors.
